Meet The Team
Julia Johnston – Solicitor, Independent Children’s Lawyer
I graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1979 with a Bachelor of Juris Prudence and a Bachelor of Laws.
I commenced my own practice in 1985 called Jameson Johnston. I continued practicing exclusively in the area of family law since 1985 to the present.
I now practice exclusively as an Independent Children’s Lawyer in the Family Court of Western Australia and a Separate Representative in the Children’s Court of Western Australia.
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in May 2019.
I have now been involved in well over 2000 Independent Children’s Lawyers and Separate Representative cases.
I was, until recently, a member of the board of WANSLEA Family Services for 29 years.
I have a keen interest in representing children in the Family Court and Children’s Court.
Jessica Carney – Senior Associate
I am a graduate of Murdoch University having completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in November 2011.
I was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in April 2013.
I have worked in the Perth family law sector since my first year of tertiary study in 2008.
Following completion of my degree, I had the pleasure of working as the Associate to the late Honourable Justice Carolyn Martin and the Honourable Justice Brian Jordan at the Family Court of Western Australia (“FCWA”).
Upon completing my Associateship at the FCWA, I practised family law and various other areas of law, including Family Violence Restraining Orders, in the South West.
I returned to Perth in October 2014 to practise solely in family law.
Whilst I practise in all areas of family law, I am particularly interested in child-related matters and family dispute resolution.
Jaime Lee Richardson – Solicitor
I hold both Psychology and Law degrees, as well as a diploma in social work.
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in 2019 and practice in all areas of Family Law. I have experience representing clients in complex property settlement matters including those involving high net worth parties, and those with international aspects. I also enjoy both simple and complex parenting matters.
In addition to being a Family Law practitioner, I have extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector working with young offenders and victims of domestic violence.
In my practice, I am able to rely on my knowledge of family violence, addiction and mental health issues to help tailor each client’s service to their needs.
I pride myself on being organised and efficient in my practice. I complete my work to a high standard to ensure my clients receive the best service. Whilst I have experience representing clients in the Family Court, including instructing Counsel at trial, I strive to assist my clients to resolve matters without the need to go to this expense, if possible.
Gina Lee – Solicitor
I studied law at Murdoch University, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 2017. I thoroughly enjoyed my studies and finished with a high distinction average and some subject prizes.
During my degree, I realised that I loved helping clients with the things that mattered most in their lives. This lead me to have a particular interest in family law, human rights law and refugee law. I studied the latter two areas of law in Geneva and have done pro bono work for refugees.
During my studies, I also worked at SCALES Community Legal Centre in Perth, which affirmed my love of family law. After graduating, I worked briefly in native title law, which was fascinating.
I’ve come to law later in life, having had careers in graphic design and art. I’ve also taken the time to be involved in the lives of my young twins.
Bethany Clune – Solicitor
I graduated from Murdoch University in December 2017 with a Bachelor of Laws. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Law & Society, and a Graduate Diploma in Law, Policy and Government from the University of Western Australia.
I commenced working at Hickman Family Lawyers in February 2019, after completing my practical legal training at another family law firm in 2018.
I was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 1 February 2019.
I developed an interest in family law during my time at university, and I hold a particular interest in complex property and financial matters.
Outside of work, I enjoy playing netball and spending time with friends and family.
Ronelle Hanbury – Senior Legal Assistant
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in November 2018 as a personal assistant, having been employed in the legal industry for a number of years.
I previously worked with Legal Aid for many years, and thereafter with a well-established family law firm in the Perth Metro area.
My interest in the legal industry led to me undertaking study and completing my Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Justice Studies) in 2008 and then undertaking and completing my Bachelor of Honours (Criminology & Justice) in 2010.
I’ve recently taken up golf with my husband (which I am sure he is now regretting) and also enjoy my time with family and friends.
Rachael O’Rourke – Senior Legal Assistant
Shehaam Du Toit – Legal Assistant
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in August 2019, after previously working in boutique family law firms for almost 11 years as a paralegal.
I was compelled to commence work in the family law field after beginning my employment in child care where I worked as a qualified care giver in community based centres situate in low socio-economic areas. The issues surrounding care and protection of children motivated me to seek a career specifically in family law as well as igniting my love for volunteering in organisations which benefit the well-being of children.
Outside of work, I enjoy travelling back home to South Africa as much as possible and spending time with my family and friends.
Taylor Dunstan – Legal Assistant
I commenced working at Hickman Family Lawyers in August 2019 as a Personal Assistant and have been working in Family Law since the beginning of 2018.
I have a particular interest in children’s matters and love to see the best possible outcome for families. My interests resulted in me commencing studies in Social Work and I look forward to further progressing my career in family law alongside my study.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling, being outdoors and spending time with family and friends.
Dimitra Murphy – Law Clerk
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Laws at Murdoch University. I am enjoying my studies and have maintained a distinction average throughout my degree.
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in September 2020, although I have been working in family law since February 2018. I am interested in both parenting matters and property matters.
I also work as a tutor for Indigenous Australian law students at Murdoch University.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family.
Rhys Puchar – Accounts and Office Manager
Throughout my career, I have had numerous managerial positions and have enjoyed the challenge of working in a family law firm for the last 2 years.
I handle all the billing, account enquiries, and trust account queries.
In my spare time I like to enjoy the ocean, be it in Perth or overseas.
Eliza Kirk – Receptionist
I joined Hickman Family Lawyers in 2019 on a temporary basis, to assist with administrative tasks in the back office. I enjoyed the work so much and got along with the team so well that they decided to keep me on and place me in the receptionist position as the first face you see when entering the business.
When I’m not working, I am studying to complete my Bachelor of Psychology, majoring in Children and Family Studies, with the intent of one day liaising with the court to assist them with family matters.
I provide support daily to all of our solicitors and clients.
